Summary of project results

The project’s objectives were to empower older adults to be socially active by sharing historically environmentally-friendly practices with children and young adults, thus decreasing their social isolation and loneliness which have been linked with multifaceted adverse health effects (WHO, 2021 ), enhance their hard and soft skills in mentorship, hence increasing their confidence, participation in the society and sense of usefulness, revive and promote the adoption of old and environmentally-friendly practices across the younger generations and empower and promote senior entrepreneurship. In conclusion, the primary goal of ECOAGE was to empower older adults to become environmental mentors to the younger generation by having an active role in inter-generational efforts on sustainable environmental practices in their own communities, while fighting the impact of the loneliness pandemic in older age.

The ECOAGE project commenced in July 2022 and concluded in January 2024, involving a bicommunal collaboration in Cyprus between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations, along with a partner from Norway. The project began with a co-design study where elderly individuals participated as researchers to create a tailored curriculum addressing their unique needs. This was followed by the introduction of a mentorship and empowerment curriculum and the implementation of training workshops in both communities. The workshops included four soft skills sessions and four environmental workshops, with hands-on experiences in eco-crafting and folklore sustainable arts. Additionally, the project organized a bicommunal field trip and two final events. The project also developed three new methodologies: a needs assessment for elder mentors, a mentor empowerment curriculum, and an environmental handbook. Furthermore, the project engaged in extensive dissemination efforts, reaching over 350 older adults and more than 50 youth and children, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

The ECOAGE project achieved significant results, particularly in empowering elderly individuals and promoting environmental sustainability. It trained 355 elderly participants (150 Greek Cypriots and 205 Turkish Cypriots), equipping them with advocacy skills and environmental education. The project also engaged over 50 youth and children, fostering intergenerational cooperation. The development of three new methodologies supported future research and initiatives for the inclusion of vulnerable individuals. The project facilitated collaborations with various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), enhancing support for vulnerable groups. Additionally, the project exceeded its targets for capacity building, with 26 representatives from CSOs participating in capacity-building activities, resulting in nine new partnerships and the development of a common environmental manual. The project''s impact extended to policy-making levels and promoted economic opportunities for participants, thereby addressing social and economic disparities and strengthening bilateral relations.

Summary of bilateral results

The ECOAGE project significantly enhanced bilateral relations by fostering collaboration with Norwegian partners (Høgskulen for grøn utvikling – HGUt University College for Green Development). The project facilitated bicommunal workshops and field trips, where participants from both communities engaged in shared activities, leading to reduced stereotyping and strengthened relationships. The Norwegian partners actively participated in major project activities, including monthly project meetings and visits to Cyprus, ensuring continuous support and advice. Their presence facilitated the exchange of ideas and enriched the project''s overall impact. They were instrumental in implementing environmental workshops, providing guidance and training on various eco-sustainable practices, which helped participants gain practical skills and knowledge.
