Description

Municipality of Ruse has established partnership with the main cultural institutions in the region in pursuit of their common objective to preserve and improve the conditions of cultural heritage performance through its digitization and provision of more attractive accessibility. Center for digitalization will be set up for this purpose. Through the successful implementation of the project, the Municipality of Ruse will unite the efforts of cultural institutions, with the planned regional approach for building better capacity in the digitization process to contribute to sustainable service needs. Also, creating a stand-alone capacity for digitization of cultural heritage is among the objectives, thus ensuring the efficiency and sustainability of the project activities and results. The project will contribute to this Bulgarian cultural heritage to achieve greater participation in the pan-European context of cultural exchange by providing access to culture and history of the region. Digital representation of the cultural history of minority groups in Ruse and some small settlements in the municipality will be enforced as an activity in achieving these goals. On the other hand, through the established partnership with the National Museum of Liechtenstein, the Municipality of Ruse set as an additional purpose to strengthen bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Liechtenstein. This will ensure exchange of experience in introducing good practices and international standards for better conservation. The envisaged activities will be implemented on the territory of Bulgaria and Liechtenstein, such as roles and concrete activities for each of the partners are detailed and approved with the partnership letter. Each of the partners will actively participate in contribution to the objectives as far as the capacity, experience and competence of each is necessary and they would contribute to ensuring the sustainability of the results.

Summary of project results

The goal of this project of the Municipality of Ruse is to unite the efforts of all cultural institutions from Bulgaria''s Ruse region, in order to digitise and preserve the vast cultural heritage if this region positioned at the Romanian border at the Danube river. The digitisation will allow the general public to get acquainted with cultural heritage sites that are located in physically remote places or are not exhibited to the general public. The project will also build capacity in the digitization process and create a digitization center in order to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the project activities and results.

This project has united all cultural institutions in the Ruse region in building a partnership in order to research and digitize the local archives. A digital center was created and the trained team managed to digitise  30,000 units - audio and video files, postcards, photos, posters and playbills from performances and spectacles, books, sketches and plans of buildings, various objects, artifacts, etc., all documents related to the turbulent cultural and historical development of the city of Ruse. An electronic platform was created to be an intersection of the diversity and identity of the region''s cultural heritage.

A much-needed digitization center was created, located in the Municipality of Ruse after an internal renovation was carried out. The project put the beginning of the digititsation process in the region. This will provide local capacity to be used in partnership from different cultural institutes, will facilitate cross-sector collaboration within the Municipality. The successfull implementation of the project has contributed to the digital representation of the local cultural history, including of Roma and Jewish ethnic groups.

Summary of bilateral results

The contribution of the Liechtenstein National Museum helped channel the project results to be more long-lasting and sustainable using the experience in digitisation to shape a forward-looking online platform. The main influence of the partner was on the way the digital exhibitions are arranged on digiruse.eu. The promoter adopted the model presented by the partner in one of its permanent exhibitions / https://www.landesmuseum.li/en/treasurechamber-permanent-exhbition/, as it provides a good presentation of the objects included in the exhibition, as well as the context in which they are placed.
