Description
The boom of the new media technology gave birth to the phenomenon of “citizen journalism”, which became an integral part of contemporary society. Today common people not only comment publications and content but also provide resources and information outside the scope of the official media. The new media change the way citizens connect to governments and public institutions. Citizen journalism provides citizens with a great opportunity to participate actively in political debates and democratic processes. Media literacy entails a number of skills enabling people to create and disseminate media messages showing knowledge of the specific qualities of each medium and actively taking part in the public debate. Media literacy is a prerequisite for citizen journalism to unfold its potential. The project offers an online course in media literacy and structured training of 40 librarians/activists interested in citizen journalism from 20 community centres in Plovdiv Region. 3 citizen journalism clubs will be set up with at least 10 active members from the community centres. The media literacy course and the guide for the citizen journalism club developed under the project will be disseminated among all in excess of 3600 community centres in Bulgaria and other interested civil society organizations and training institutions.
