Description

Despite the formal guarantee of gender equality and human rights, in everyday life there still persists a number of inequalities which are the primary cause of gender stereotypes and prejudices. The aims of the project are to strengthen active citizenship. Thus, we see the need for "visibility" of gender aspects in gender-unequal environment where the application of the principles of democracy is different for women than for men, towards women's disadvantage. Therefore, the project focuses on support and understanding of gender equality and the empowerment of young women through education and edification. Through activities, symbolic and real space is created for them and it supports their awareness on gender equality and human rights. The project is directed towards the elimination of gender stereotypes through awareness raising activities in general public. Project outcomes-public discussions, round tables, diaries, library,..support the fulfillment of the aim of the project.

Summary of project results

The main obstacles in the process of achieving gender equality are 1) insufficient understanding of gender equality, 2) continuing gender stereotypes and then 3) low civic participation of girls and women. In all these areas the project has brought a major opportunity for change by raising awareness about gender equality; by edification and gender education but also by promoting civic activism of women and girls. The main goal of the project was to strengthen active citizenship of women and girls. Partial goals were 1) promotion of gender equality and women's human rights (including reproductive rights) - focusing on strengthening their effective implementation (also) through 2) eliminating gender stereotypes.Primary target group were secondary school students (especially girls); secondary target group were teachers, but also the public. Target groups participated in activities also directly - at round tables and discussions as debaters but also as volunteers in other activities. Students were directly involved in the project and they were also as respondents in research. Thus, the project on a symbolic level opened space for secondary school students by presenting significant women as role models, but also by presenting information about gender equality in publications (card games, calendars, school year planner) and by the elimination of gender stereotypes. On a real level, Feminist library in Prešov created „A Room of her own”. Project outputs - public debates, round tables, research, publications and feminist library, - directly fulfilled the goal of the project and also strengthened output recipients in the process of eliminating gender stereotypes as a cause of gender inequality. At the same time the outputs helped to promote wider awareness of the principles of gender equality. The project respected the long-term sustainability of the results - it is a "mosaic of activities" to meet their target. They are the activities which we have used already for a long time by voluntary work but also ones in which we use contacts, acquired during our existence. Certain partial activities may be financed individually - from smaller grants.
