Description

The project will focus on rainwater harvesting, recycling and reuse. It will involve children, parents, local communities and the general public. The objective of the project is to increas public environmental awareness in adaptation to climate change issues. Through the project implementation, the volume of rainwater that is reused will be achieved and the knowledge among children about climate change adaptation measures will be raised. The curricula focused on management of rainwater and climatic changes will be modified for the school education programme. Educational activities focused on environment will also be organised. Children, students and civil services are expected to benefit from the project implementation.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to implement concrete adaptation measures in the context of climate change at the Grammar School of H. Selye in Komarno with Hungarian teaching language. Activities are divided into investment and edifying-educational activities. The main objective of investment activities is to implement a wider range of water conservation measures in the campus to help alleviate the effects of an increase in weather extremes (the prolonged drought and higher rainfalls), or disconnect part of the campus from storm sewer. Within the plan of the project were implemented 3 types of adaptation measures: - The creation of bio-retention system with surface infiltration - Building a water permeable surface in the school yards and adjacent areas - Increasing of the proportion of green areas, planting trees Edifying-educational activities 1. editing / complemention of existing curriculum of subjects: Slovak, Hungarian, English, German and Spanish languages, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, History, Civics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer science. 2. four expert lectures in cooperation with external lecturers (21.11.2014, 03.07.2015, 20.03.2015 and 23.04.2015) were organized in the school year 2014/2015 to increase the awareness of students about climate changes and its results Lectures were opened for pupils, students, their parents and the general public. From presentations were made videos that are posted on a web site dedicated to climate changes: (http://selye.gartproject.com/sk/111/videa_a_fotografie_z_prednasok.html). 3. Within this project was announced internal competition among grammar school students for the best presentation on climate change. Evaluation was carried out by teachers of vocational subjects of Grammar school of H. Selye. Winners of the competition were officially awarded. 4. For pupils of primary school in Komarno was announced an external art competition in which students could log in their drawings, paintings and posters on the theme of climate changes. Festive evaluation of works took part at Grammar school of H. Selye. School with the largest number of competitors got a special prize. All expenses were realized in connection with activities. All planned indicators were met and the implementation of the project was carried out without bigger complications.
