Description

Daniel Castle is an important part of the Hungarian ethnic minority's cultural heritage. It holds significant clues about the history of this ethnic group, and reveals details about their economic and social importance for the region, about their cultural life and customs. Due to inadequate use and interventions during the communist era, the castle was in need of vital renovation and measures to revitalise it. The renovation of the building has taken place, but the castle needs further development to make it interesting as for tourists and for cultural events. The project's main aim is to valorise the castle both from a scientific and cultural perspective and to facilitate public access to all the elements of the castle. The target group includes: members and collaborators of the promoter organisation and members of the local community (young people and craftsmen); members of the scientific community (historians, art historians, archaeologists, restaurateurs); artists (painters, sculptors, photographers); representatives of the local and regional NGO-s and local public administration.

Summary of project results

Located in an economically underdeveloped region, Daniel Castle, a representative heritage building for the Hungarian culture in Transylvania, has been recently restored but its touristic and cultural potential has not been capitalized properly. The recently discovered and restored mural paintings of the castle also lacked proper capitalization despite being a unique discovery for showcasing the Hungarian nobility culture of 17th century in Transylvania. By organizing cultural and scientific events inside Daniel Castel, the project demonstrated how a representative monument of the Hungarian ethnic minority can produce a positive impact in the local community from the cultural, economic and social point of view. The following outputs were delivered resulting from the main activities of the project: 4 artistic creative workshops, resulting in 111 artistic works inspired by the castle and it’s culture; exhibition showcasing the castle’s history consisting of 10 boards; a trilingual book about the castle and its mural paintings including the results of the interpretation and graphic reconstruction works which were carried out as part of the project. The project results were presented during special exhibitions, scientific conferences and guided tours, in order to attract more visitors to the castle. Through the implementation of the project the local community benefitted by a rich cultural offer (exhibitions and events organized inside Daniel Castle) and by a high number of visitors and media attention being directed towards the region.
