Description

Municipality of Glodeni is home to a large number of children and youth at risk of social exclusion. Illiteracy, lack of information, early school leaving and high unemployment rates are factors creating and maintaining poverty among the Roma community named Serbia (438 Roma people). The project aims to reduce the social and economic gap between the Roma population and the rest of the community, by promoting and developing integrated activities for the Roma population, and establishing and endowing a day care center in the community. 244 Roma children and 110 parents will benefit from after school program, sport, and recreational activities.The project will address these challenges by improving living standards, increasing access to public education, administration and health, reducing school dropouts for children at risk, providing basic services for the Roma community, activating Roma people through their involvement in the project, and encouraging partnerships between the beneficiaries and local authorities.

Summary of project results

The project intervention was identified as necessary in Glodeni Commune, Serbia Community, as the Rroma population community is very poor and there were social and economic discrepancies between Rroma population and the rest of the population, and the main goal was to reduce this social and economic gap. The population in Serbia community is with a majority of Rroma population, about 1.200 habitants, with a large number of childre.The project addressed mainly the children from this community, to reduce risk of school dropping and social exclusion. Serbia community is 1,5 km away from the centre of the commune, were the school is. Statistic showed that 35-40% school dropping percent. A day Center to provide access to education activities placed in Serbia community was oportune and necessary. The project was a partnership between the local authority and the local secondary school, and the main objective achieved is the day Center from Serbia community from Glodeni, to offer access to education for rroma children, to reduce school dropping, to offer opportunities for these children to spend time through non-formal education activities. At the end of this project, 244 children age between 3-14 years and 110 parents were direct beneficiaries of the project activities such as after school activities, sport, and education activities, 7 specialists worked with beneficiaries through the project activities implementing. As the project partner was the secondary school, the school activity and the Day center activity became complementary. the school was also involved in distributing clothes and school supplies for the children.
