Description

Limited financial possibilities and extremely difficult road access in the rainy seasons to the primary school in Titesti, has made many Roma children from the Valea Manastirii Village, consisting entirely of Roma people, to drop out of school. The main objective is to increase access of Roma children to pre-school education and to reduce drop-out rates. This will be achieved through the creation of a day center in the school, where 15 preschool children, 40 school children – who are the main target group, 15 children who dropped out of school and 100 parents, all belonging to the Roma population, will be part of a series of services such as after school care and non-formal courses for children, parenting classes and activities that will highlight the importance of social inclusion and education. Another outcome of the project will be asphalting the main road (1,120 km) linking together the Roma community's houses and the school.

Summary of project results

The project main goals were to develop educational programme (after school and second chance education) for children in Titesti village and to pave a road that connect school with poor community in order to increase the school frequency for Roma pupils. The target group was represented by 70 children and their parents. The promotor achieved all the project indicators. Although the project had restrained activities the impact in the community was important. First of all the connection of the community was increased by the asphalting the main access road to Valea Manastririi primary school. The educational program were developed on several levels: after school program for 40 children who also received a daily hot meal, second-chance education program for a number of 15 Roma children and extra-curricular activities (4 trips organized for children with 40 participants). The parents were also engaged in parenting sessions increasing their involvement in the children school life. Beside these activities with the direct beneficiaries, the promoter tried to increase the team capacity to write European project by organizing a training program for 8 persons. The project activities were promoted through a special web site and Facebook page.
