Description

FEDRA – The Federation for Rights and Resources for People with Autism Spectrum Disorders aims to increase the capacity of local data collection, of monitoring and documentation regarding educational integration of children with ASD in order to forward recommendations and proposals for public policies that better serve the cause of its beneficiaries. Thus, FEDRA aims to monitor, collect and highlight success stories in 13 counties and Bucharest and contribute indirectly to the multiplication of these examples at national level by formulating a recommendation report to the Ministry of National Education and the County Educational Boards. The report will promote the integration of children with ASD in schools and highlight specific aspects concerning measures to be taken at national and local level to respect the laws and the rights of people with ASD regarding education. It will also facilitate collaboration between parents, other social actors and teachers in their efforts to support the development of children with ASD within the community.

Summary of project results

FEDRA – The Federation for Rights and Resources for People with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) aimed at increasing the capacity for local data collection, for monitoring and documentation regarding educational integration of children with ASD in order to forward recommendations and proposals for public policies that better serve the cause of its beneficiaries. Thus, during the project, the Federation has monitored, collected and highlighted success stories in 13 counties and Bucharest. The aim was to contribute to the multiplication of these examples at national level by formulating a recommendation report to the Ministry of National Education and the County Educational Boards. Although the existing law in the field contains a special methodology with inclusive measures aiming at increasing access to education, it is often ignored and it is not unitary applied, leading to violation of children's rights. This is why FEDRA has considered that monitoring and evaluating the capacity of the existing local services is essential. The "Report on school integration of children with ASD" contains the stories of 19 autistic children based on information provided by parents, therapists and teachers in one to one interviews. Success stories were documented from the perspective of school integration of children with ASD, success being appreciated in light of several criteria such as child adjustment to the school environment, his/her participation in classroom activities, the sense of attachment to the class he/she is part in, interactions between the child and colleagues, school results and the child's behavioural and cognitive development according to the individualised plan. The 19 FEDRA member organisations are using the report, as well as the Position Paper developed, to build partnerships with County School Inspectorates, in order to identify good practices examples and also to increase the number of children with ASD successfully integrated into the education system.
