Description

Until the 60s in Covasna County almost in each major commune, near the school or church yard existed an orchard in which young people were educated about how to plant and protect fruit trees and about the traditional fruit species specific of their region. After times these orchards disappeared together with the related education. The project aims to develop an educational and promotional program about traditional fruit tree species in the local communities of Covasna County. A campaign will be organized and a network of donors involving 300 people will be created, implementing three pilot projects based on active implication. The target group of the project is formed by 1000 adults and 200 children and youth from 4 rural localities of Covasna County. The development of an educational center, 1000 fruit saplings planted in four rural communities, an educational program and 200 youth and children involved in educational program are the expected results of the project.

Summary of project results

The project “Orchard for the Community” had as main objective the development of an educational programme and the promotion of traditional species of fruit trees among the members of Covasna County’s local communities. The project proved necessary, because there were no local programmes for the protection of fruit trees in that specific region. As a consequence of the project, a trees nursery has been created and is being looked after at Valea Crisului, for the cultivation of autochthonous fruit tree seedlings. 17 local communities and 1,200 families got involved in the restoration of the traditional orchards. A total of 3,600 seedlings have been distributed among local people; a non-formal education programme has been developed, and three educational programmes for children and youth were developed. Furthermore, within the project, a comprehensive material for school activities has also been developed and printed in 300 copies. About 30 local companies, 6 professional volunteers and 120 students were involved in the project’s activities. The nursery that was created in Valea Crisului/ Covasna County will ensure in the long-term the need of indigenous seedlings.
