The Association of Psychiatry Hospital Dr.Gh.Preda Sibiu deemed permanent voluntary service is vital for the Hospital. Psychiatric patients require permanent non-medical services (accompaniment,social programs, education,information, support). The hospital can’t provide them, the staff is insufficient. Volunteer activities are essential for the psycho-social rehabilitation of patients and for their families. Friends of the Hospital project proposes the establishment, operation and professional development of volunteer service, through internship programs due to the concrete needs of the beneficiaries. Partners will promote volunteering through information and awareness about the climate of stigma and discrimination. The results are: the creation of new services for patients, involving at least 160 people in training and voluntary activities, information about volunteering and no-hate-speech in the local communities, developing organizations through professionalization.
Summary of project results
The promoter has founded during the project a permanent voluntary service, which has become very important for the hospital in which it was implemented. Psychiatric patients require permanent non-medical services (company, social programmes, education, information, support). The hospital can’t provide them, the staff being insufficient. Volunteer activities are essential for the psycho-social rehabilitation of patients and for their families. The project established and managed a professional volunteer service, through internship programmes, based to the concrete needs of the beneficiaries. The partner in the project has experience regarding recruitment procedures, selection and training of volunteers and provides real benefits for personal development through volunteering training. The results of the project are: the creation of new services for patients, involvement of at least 160 people in training and voluntary activities, awareness-rising activities about volunteering and no hate speech in the local communities, development of the organisations through professionalization of volunteering services. Due to the fact that "Friends inside the hospital" was the first project of this kind in Sibiu and one of the few in Romania, the overall results are notable. The programme is now ongoing, and now the civil society in Sibiu and the Psychology Faculty are supporting the social involvement and volunteering with the Psychiatry Hospital. This is due to the fact that there is a structure with procedures and a volunteers' center where people learn, interact, are welcomed and introduced properly, can contribute to the wellbeing of the patients, are trained and follow induction programmes and everything is done in a professional way. The promoter continues to run the volunteering programme and to use the training structure and materials. The volunteering center which was renovated and established and the activated staff of the hospital are the basis of this success.
