The project beneficiaries are going to be 24 women: 12 Gypsy and 12 Romanians. There are going to be organized knitted lessons. The 24 women are going to learn to knit for their families and to be employed lately or they can become self employed or they can found a SRL, the project result being the increase of the standard of living of the village. The project is necessary for helping disadvantaged people from this community by educating them in tolerance and the need to work with their own hands.

Summary of project results

The village of Valea Stanciului, Dolj County is a poor community of Roma and non-Roma people, with only a few members having an income. Due to the low income and the poor living standards, parents were not able to ensure a decent life for their children and often couldn’t even provide food and clothes. In order to solve this situation, Amazonia Association implemented a small grant project aiming to develop knitting skills to 24 women (12 Roma and 12 non-Roma). During selection of the beneficiaries, people receiving social aid were taken into consideration. The 24 beneficiaries learned to knit different garments for family members, especially for their children: scarves, hats, sweaters, pants. Project activities consisted in: selecting the women who were going to participate to the knitting workshops, purchasing materials, course development and promoting the project activities and the garments resulted. The participating women transmitted in their testimonials that it was a very useful and new activity for them. The project succeeded to improve the relationship between the beneficiaries and the community members and to generally increase their self-esteem. Also, family members received clothing items made by the beneficiaries. The Promoter intends to sustain this activity by promoting garments made by the beneficiaries and by selling them in the future. The partner in the project, Valea Stanciului City Hall, assured a place for conducting the knitting courses, thus becoming aware of the problems as well as possibilities to involve the disadvantaged members of the community in different types of activities.
