The project is implemented in partnership with “Dumbravita Association for people” and Dumbravita Secondary School. After the project implementation the 50 children will have improved academic results, we’ll achieve 10 business plans, we’will set up 3 small businesses and we’ll have a realistic analysis of community needs.

Summary of project results

Dumbravita commune in Brasov County, like many other rural areas in Romania, is facing high school dropout rates, discrepancies between the school performances of Roma and non Roma children, a high number of people living based on social aid and seasonal work, low level of entrepreneurship, and a low engagement of children in the process of decision making regarding their needs at local level. The project was designed to contribute at decreasing school dropout rates of the Roma children, to encourage the civic participation of the children in the community life and to contribute at the economic development of the community in Dumbravita. It aimed to reduce the educational differences between Roma and non Roma pupils in Dumbravita and to develop entrepreneurial spirit among adults. This was achieved through working on a local development strategy entitled "Workshop for the Future", involving 50 children and providing nonformal educational activities (crafting, English lessons, IT classes), providing entrepreneurial counselling and training for 30 Roma and non Roma adults in Dumbravita village. The educational activities and the “Workshop for the Future” created a favourable context for children with different cultural backgrounds to interact and to know each other better, contributing to reduced educational differences. The main achievements of the project include a better attitude of children towards education/school and an improved relationship between teachers and primary school students due to the nonformal education activities. Also, improved civic participation of the beneficiary children was noted, and resulted in the implementation of a community project: two playgrounds were created, co-financed by the local authorities and involving many Roma parents. As a result of the entrepreneurial training and counselling, 4 beneficiaries registered their own private businesses and received support for the start-up activities.
