Description

Knowing that Budila and Tarlungeni localities are characterized by multiculturalism and the existence of a large group of GMI beneficiaries, the most Roma, the project aims to intervene in ethnic relations to develop and harmonize them under the guidance of specialists and thus organizing 3 interethnical activities in each community. Also , the project aims to: 1. Provide added value services to the Social assistance department of the city halls, far outweighed by legislation / bureaucracy in place, by creating community centers in the two villages, where a social worker will operate, supported by a Roma mediator. In these centers, GMI beneficiaries will find support for methodologies related to law 416 but will take advantage of the logistics of the center too.

Summary of project results

The problem addressed by the “Support for the development of the interethnic communities from Tarlungeni and Budila, Brasov County” project was the lack of cooperation between the Roma and non Roma community members from Tarlungeni and Budila, as well as the paternalistic mind set of the local population, which meant to wait for the Local Public Authorities to solve all their problems. The aim of the project was to increase the civic spirit of the community members from Tarlungeni and Budila, to reduce the distance between Roma and non Roma community members as well as to improve the cooperation between the Public Local Authorities and the community members. In order to achieve this, a community facilitation process was implemented and the following results were achieved: two interethnic initiative groups that created a model of good cooperation between Roma and non Roma ethnics, 19 members of the two initiative groups trained and supported to identify and analyse community problems, find solutions, plan community actions and gather information necessary to draft detailed profiles of the two communities. During the process the initiative groups planned and implemented 7 community actions involving other 272 community members. The initiative groups presented their achievements in the local council meetings, becoming role models of interethnic cooperation for the whole community. In order to overcome the problems related to difficult access to information and support in addressing specific needs by most of the disadvantaged Roma community members, Community Resource Centers were set up in Tarlungeni and Budila, with support from the local public authorities. The beneficiaries of these Centers mostly requested help for receiving and filling in special files and forms (e.g. supporting documents necessary for the heating aid, specific forms necessary to public social assistance office), counselling for social rights, advice for obtaining personal identity documents, advice for getting food packages from the Romanian Government and EU etc. The main achievements of the project are the improvement of the civic spirit as well as of the interethnic cooperation among Roma, non-Roma and the local public authorities in Tarlungeni and Budila.
