Summary of project results

Romania lacks a legislative framework and a coherent national programme for early assistance and intervention. Within the project “A good start”, the Rehabilitation Foundation “Speranta”, together with partner organisation Save the Children Timisoara, set up an innovative Early Intervention Center for children with disabilities or presenting risk of developmental delay or disability, and their families. 162 children presenting a disability or an increased risk of developmental delay or disability (L. Down syndrome, autism, neuromotor deficiencies, severe hearing and visual impairments, mental retardation and other types of developmental delays) benefited of multidisciplinary therapies, according to specific needs. The services provided in the centre included psychological evaluation and diagnosis, speech therapy, physiotherapy, music therapy, art-therapy and occupational therapy. The parents (217 persons) benefited of professional information and counselling. The project promoter cooperated with relevant local authorities and institutions (with responsibilities in the field of development, education and community integration of children). The team of specialists developed the guide for parents "The abilities of my child. Observation guide of the child (0-4 years)", a useful tool that provides guidance for parents to detect development deviations and encourages them to ask for specialised opinion as soon as possible.
