Description

Our association intends to create and implement a sport resources center and to promote the diffusion and practice of sport for people with disabilities, particularly within the school system of Setúbal Peninsula. At the same time, we aim at involving local clubs and corporations in sport for people with disabilities, demystifying disability issues that still occur, and providing them not only with knowledge but also the access to the means that permit the inclusion of persons with disabilities and the creation of equal opportunities. We intend to reach a universe of 40% of the groups of schools and secondary schools of Setúbal Peninsula as well as 10% of the corporations in the municipal districts of Almada and Setúbal.

Summary of project results

Through this project, a Resource Centre for Adapted Sports was created to serve the population of the Setubal Peninsula. The promoter, which provides services to youths with cerebral palsy and neurological diseases, improved its capacity to provide these services. A partnership with the Seixal Municipality, which made the physical space for the centre available and supported its promotion, was very important for the implementation of this project, as was the informal participation of many schools and other organizations. Adapted sporting material and teaching materials concerning several adapted sports was acquired, and training was provided to 40 NGO staff members. Later, 18 training sessions provided to schools involved 241 young trainees. Communication on the promoter’s activities and awareness-raising on the needs of citizens with cerebral palsy and neurological diseases was also a key concern of the project, which improved the promoter’s visibility.
