Description

This project it is intended to act in terms of identity resources, heritage and cultural valuation related to maritime exploration from the city of Lisbon, with the motto maritime explorations associated with the "Portuguese Discoveries". It is proposed the creation of a discovery guide, involving a set of "exploration stations" throughout the city of Lisbon, related to the city in the discoveries epoch, with boats, navigation instruments, cultures crossroads and biodiversity of the oceans navigated (principle 5 and 6 of the ocean literacy). This itinerary includes different spaces within the city: monuments and places associated with the discoveries and meeting of cultures (Orient Museum Foundation); institutions of maritime science (Navy Museum, Vasco da Gama Aquarium, Planetarium). This guide will be created in digital format for mobile technologies and is designed for the school community.

Summary of project results

Based on the inventory and selection of the main monuments and spaces existing in the city of Lisbon related to the Portuguese discoveries and the objects of each Museum involved, the mobile application, Roteiro dos Descobrimentos, was created and is available in the "Play Store" (which can be downloaded totally free of charge: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details...) and proposes a set of 8 itineraries, distributed throughout the city of Lisbon, where you can explore issues related to following dimensions: • "The city in the time of discovery": it addresses aspects related to the history associated with the period of the discoveries (Manueline symbology, social groups and the way of life of the time). The 3 routes related to this dimension take place in different places of the city of Lisbon (Belém, Mouraria and Alfama, downtown Lisbon). • "A city of peoples and cultures": it addresses aspects related to cultural diversity and the encounter of cultures through trips made during the Discoveries (diversity of languages, gastronomy, Portuguese Presence in Asia). The 3 routes related to this dimension take place in Martim Moniz and Mouraria and in the Museum of the Orient. • "Offshore": addresses issues associated with navigation and star orientation (navigational instruments, maritime guidance points, constellations). The course takes place in the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium, and should be done in an integrated way with one of the sessions of the Planetarium. • "Monsters and other sea creatures": it addresses aspects related to the marine biodiversity of the different oceans traveled during the sea voyage to India (Portuguese coast fish, coral reefs, marine mammals and associated legends). The course takes place at the Vasco da Gama Aquarium. This itinerary implies the access to the websites of ocean literacy. All itineraries have been tested. In the testing process, 8 teachers and 131 students aged 8 to 11 years old from different schools of the 1st and 2nd cycle of basic education in the Lisbon region were involved. Teachers and students responded to an evaluation questionnaire and an interview. Based on the information collected, the itineraries were reformulated and finalized. This Roadmap can be explored in a school or family context. Project website: http://www.ie.ulisboa.pt/projetos/roteiro-dos-descobrimentos
