Description

Understanding of climate change impacts in Poland is not satisfactory. The project will fill the gaps in knowledge and understanding of impacts of climate change. The project is expected to increase understanding of climate change impacts in selected systems and sectors in Poland and of interpretation of uncertainty. It focuses on assessment of impact of climate changes on ecosystems and biodiversity and of risk for agriculture, food production and water management. It is expected to achieve a tangible improvement in understanding of climate change and its impacts in Poland and a broad dissemination of this knowledge. It is also expected to deliver a valuable contribution to science. The project aims to establish a broad dissemination agenda, from high-quality scientific publications and presentations at scientific conferences to media-oriented products. In particular, the project aims to develop an interactive web mapping system enabling other researchers to use information generated by CHASE-PL in their own studies. Outcomes of the project will be interesting for scientists, policy-makers, civil society, media, stakeholders and Polish society.

Summary of project results

The topical area of climate change and its impacts, recognized as very important in Norway, does not get a comparable status in Poland. Indeed, the project was needed to reduce gaps in understanding and to improve general awareness. Project’s objective has been achieved and contributed to improved understanding of climate change detection in observed records, projections of future climate and primary impacts on selected sectors: water resources, reduction of risk of natural hazards, environment, agriculture and health. Results of the project are presented in a book published in English and in Polish. The Polish book is made freely available on internet. As for today, 15 journal articles have been published and many other articles have been submitted or are in the final stage of preparation, likely to be submitted in near future.

Summary of bilateral results

Shared results of the project include information on climate change (processed observed data and projections for the future), made available on internet (and published in data journals). Considerable improvement of knowledge and understanding has been achieved, related to: climate change detection in observed records, projections of future climate and primary impacts on selected sectors: water resources, reduction of risk of natural hazards, environment, agriculture and health. Strengthened bilateral relations were achieved at the project level (through collaboration in the project and joint publications also after the project finalization). Indeed, bilateral partnership contributed to the success of the project, linking strengths of both partner countries – climate science of Norway and climate impact science of Poland.
