Description

Cancer, and particularly colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer. are a major threat to the inhabitants of Silesia. The District Hospital in Zawiercie needs access to screening for cancers of the digestive system due to the steadily increasing proportion of such cases, a very high mortality due to cancer detection in a very advanced stage, and the associated very low survival rate. Moreover, neither in Silesia, nor the districts of Zawiercie and Myszków, have any programs on screening for cancers of the digestive system. The objective of the project is the implementation of the screening programme for cancer of the digestive system, including purchase of equipment. The key elements of the project health education (meetings with potential project participants and the project participants and their families) and trainings covering new methods of detection and diagnosis. The target group is the people aged 40 years and older living in Zawierciański and Myszkowski that are invited to the screening programme, as well as medical staff at the Hospital.

Summary of project results

Cancer, and particularly colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer. are a major threat to the inhabitants of Silesia. During the projectthe District Hospital in Zawiercie implemented interesting program on screening for cancers of the digestive system for inhabitants of Zawiercie and Myszków district. An important part was also purchase of equipment which was used to perform examinations aimed at early detection of gastrointestinal cancers – the number of diagnostic set is 6. The research was done in modules and in schemes. The project also included medical consultations. Between February 2015 and June 2016, a total of 5422 consultations were conducted, a total of 20911 examinations were performed (18306 laboratory tests, 768 ultrasound examinations, 4 ERCP examinations, 448 gastroscopy examinations, 87 biopsies, 170 HP tests, 575 colposcopy examinations,128 biopsies, 252 biopsy sample tests, 167 CTs of the abdomen. 2 laparoscopic examinations were performed and 4 biopsy samples were taken). An important part was also health education – 30 meetings were conducted by a dietician and an oncologist and were devoted the prevention of gastrointestinal cancer, and a healthy lifestyle, including eating habits - 1 500 people was attended to these meetings. 3 training session for medical staff were conducted. The project achieved all predicted results and indicators.
