Description

Over 40000 hedgehogs are killed on public roads and by floods and flooding every year in Poland. Next to 12000 are injured or killed as a result of burning grass, garden maintenance and dog aggression. Within the last 3 years the number of hedgehogs killed on the roads has increased, and the reason is likely to be the growing network of roads and more and more cars. At the current rate of disappearance of hedgehogs, the species may become highly endangered in only a couple of years. The aim of the project is to raise social awareness about hedgehogs in Poland: the needs and methods of protection, the threats and the counteraction needed. The project will increase knowledge about hedgehogs, and so improve their security in the human environment, mainly on roads and gardens. The project increases public awareness about hedgehogs and methods of their protection. Municipal police and urban greenery workers, veterinarians, owners of gardens, school pupils, teachers, older people who are the ones with the lowest awareness of the need to protect biodiversity and media (press, radio, TV) will benefit from the project.
