Description

The aim of the project is to develop and test prototype, biological filter system, for a water treatment equipment of the fish hatchery. The new technology will increase the volume of water re-circulation up to at least 90% (from current 75%) and reduce electricity and water consumption. In the result use of new technology will increase the efficiency of the fish hatchery in proportion to the resources used. According to the Aquaculture Strategic Guidelines for 2014–2020, it is specified that Latvian aquaculture has a very high potentials (since both resources and knowledge, as well as markets are available), while currently low productivity is mentioned among weaknesses. Development of closed (re-circulation) systems must be promoted in Latvia. Therefore within this project the Norway grant supports Latvian entrepreneur in one of the most important business fields in Latvia.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project is to create biological strainer system with recirculation indicator at least 90% (as from 75%), that it is suitable for characters of Latvia water resources. New system is necessary for the company to enter in new economic sector – development and supply of aquaculture. New system provides decrease of electricity consumption for compressor 3 times, and in general decrease by 40%, and decrease of water consumption 2- 3 times, by keeping up the same amount of cultivated fish (10-14 tons per year). Therefore water and energy resources have been used more efficient. New system is compare with existing system that requires recirculation or input of fresh water by 25%. Within the project the research of theoretical solutions and technical project have been developed and prototype bio-filter system have been set up . Project aim has been achieved fully.
