Description

SIA "Nipon" aims to expand their operation starting a production of specifically developed compact equipment for production of compostable, bio-degradable material packaging. The idea is grounded in the company's long-term operation producing "traditional" plastic packaging products using self-made equipment. Analysis of customer's needs has shown that they must use standard high-output production equipment for non-organic polymer materials. The implementation of the project shall result in (1) development of new packaging production equipment prototype and technical documentation, (2) test of a prototype with necessary improvements, (3) establishment of contacts with potential buyers of the equipment and to conclude intention protocols and/or agreements on procurement of the unit (>2), (4) increased turnover of the company by ~ 40 % from 2017, and (5) increased number of employees by at least 30% within the company The projects’ goal corresponds with aims specified in Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia until 2030.

Summary of project results

Within the Green Industry Innovation programme in Latvia the new environmentally friendly, specifically developed and compact equipment for production of compostable, bio-degradable material packaging for SMS’s businesses in food production sector has been developed. Mainly medium and small sized food producers, who currently are using standard unified packaging produced from environmentally unfriendly materials now have opportunity to produce packaging themselves on an easy-to-move-and-install equipment by using combined biodegradable material – compostable bio-plastic with paper. Also implementation of principles used in the Environmental Policy of Latvia, including the principle of sustainable development, principle of “polluter pays” and principle of producer’s responsibility has been fostered.
