Description

The project foresees a number of measures for Latgale regional NGOs in the field of social inclusion and education. The plan aims to strengthen civil society in Latgale to strengthen democracy by means of NGO participation in education and social policy. The main activities include promotion of cooperation: participation in national NGO networks, capacity strengthening measures: developing strategy for the foundation “Veronika”, promotion of human-rights principles by participation in the project "School Bag", organizing Annual award for teachers and providing scholarships for 9th grade graduates in Latgale. The project also will promote cooperation: cross-sectoral cooperation between non-governmental organizations, provide advocacy of various interest groups and NGOs, and ensure participation in policy-making and decision-making processes. To ensure the NGO's sustainability the project will carry out measures to find additional financial resources to fund its activities. The project will activate the parents of Latgalian school children into solving their children problems.

Summary of project results

The project had to be implemented because of low level of welfare and social inequality in the Latgale’s region, where due to poor material circumstances many children leaving school and are not competitive in the labor market in the future. The project’s aim was to strengthen civil society in Latgale’s region for solving this problem by intensifying work of NGOs in the field of education and social activities, as well as by increasing number of NGOs, which are active in decision making processes and which activities have impact on long term development on regional level. The aim was achieved and as a result civil society and democracy in Latgale was strengthened by means of NGO participation in educational and social policy. The main results are as follows: 1) Developing strategy for the Foundation Veronika; 2) Found 1 donor within campaign "School Bag", as a result 20 sets of stationery for schools were donated; 3) It has been reached an agreement on further support of the campaign "School Bag"; 4) provided an information about possible financial support of youth in case they decide to start studies at high schools; 5) provided an opinion on the published research about the early school dropout causes and risks of young people in the age group from 13 to 18 years; 6) ensured a cross-sectoral cooperation between non-governmental organizations; 7) 4 NGOs participated in policy-making and decision-making processes; 8) Provided consultations for NGOs. The project’s target group were NGOs and schools representatives – teachers, administration and parents – were involved in the activities by regular communication with school administration and using support of Latgale’s region NGOs network organization. Main benefit for target group is new information, material support of pupils and participation in decision making process.
