Description

The aim of the project is to make MOZAIKA one of the leading human rights organizations in Latvia by improving its efficiency and sustainability, as well as to increase the number of people participating in voluntary service. The project is aimed at LGBT persons' issues for creating more informed and supportive society, ensuring sustainability of Mozaika, adopting important amendments to laws, organizing events of international level, like EuroPride, local and international cooperation in NGO networks, support to LGBT culture and sport, improvement of health prophylaxis and health service availability, research and monitoring of hate crime, as well as raising of capacity of activists. Our target group is LGBT persons, LGBT friendly persons, politicians and state officials, various specialists and professionals, as well as wider society.

Summary of project results

The main goal of the core funding programme was to achieve that the LGBT and their friends association MOZAIKA becomes one of the leading organisations in Latvia, ensuring its recognition both as an LGBT rights and a broader-spectrum human rights organisation. The target groups of the project were NVO members, including 264 members of 3 employees and 32 volunteers. Similarly, the target group amounted to 3,500 and 3,000 LGBT people LGBT-friendly people. The following results have been achieved: • "Coming out of the closet" day; • "World AIDS Day"; • Participation in the "Lielā Talka" and "Riga Marathon"; • Partnership Development Act, as a result, developed one bill and reached the LGBT community legal situation; • Media Breakfast on LGBT issues Latvian and the world, representatives of the media awareness, media information provided quality improvement as well as the promotion of cooperation in the promotion and improvement of the media representatives; • International Human Rights Day; • The European Pride 2015 (EuroPride) LGBT visibility raising Latvian LGBT community self-esteem improvement in the promotion of the LGBT community involvement in the promotion of public events, the promotion of transparency, as well as gaining experience in organizing international events. Project was necessary to improve the life quality of LGBT persons in Latvia, taking into account the homophobic society this project was a push forward for the stability of the LGBT and their friends association MOZAIKA. Many studies have shown that LGBT persons in Latvia were suffering from social stigma as well as from discrimination and through the implementation of the project situation has significantly changed for the good. During the project many positive changes have been achieved but also several setbacks such as adoption of the amendments to the Education Law stating that children will need to undergo “Morality lessons” in schools learning about the moral values stated in the Constitution, especially in the Article 110 which stipulates that marriage is only between man and the women. MOZAIKA during the project programme has significantly increased the volume and quality of discussions in the society about the human rights of LGBT persons, and has stood up for human rights of all groups, as a result becoming one of the most visible and well known human rights organisations in Latvia, and has also earned recognition of the international partners.
