Description

Development of new paper packaging technology would mitigate the use of plastic packaging material. The Project Promoter will seek to develop a revolutionary new ambient recyclable packaging technology for liquids, offering up to 12 month shelf life without the need for product refrigeration or preservatives. By implementing paper packaging technology the Project Promoter will reduce consumption of plastic, glue, electricity, pollution taxes and CO2 emission. The other companies in Lithuania will be able to apply similar technologies to their brands by innovating paper packaging technologies and lowering the footprint of the industry. This will create a positive influence in the communities by minimizing the wastes and increasing awareness of green technologies. Also the company is seeking to develop 100% recyclable packaging, innovative precise filling, pallet stretching film minimization technologies and solar power with air re-circulation energy within the production process. These technologies will help to reduce electricity, plastic and water consumption in production processes.

Summary of project results

The mineral water producer Birštono mineraliniai vandenys successfully implemented the project “Paper packaging technology development in Birštono mineraliniai vandenys”. In cooperation with the Norwegian company Berg Holding, the aim was to create and implement a new green paper packaging, coated with a very thin layer of bioplastics, and to develop and implement new green technologies in the company's production process. With the help of Lithuanian scientists, even two world-class innovations have been developed: two types of bioplastic coated paper packaging and bioplastic technology. Commercializing these inventions, it is expected to reach organic stores, specialized markets and other places that place great emphasis on the environment and the circular economy. Such packaging will be completely recycled and will reduce the amount of plastic used in production, and the beverages contained therein will be protected for a period of 12 months from color, taste and odor changes. The innovations will be available to other manufacturers and, therefore, the overall reduction in CO2 will be even wider. It is also important that consumers will have the opportunity to pay attention to what kind of packaging they choose, which will enhance their range of sustainable choices. All company's production processes have the impact to ecology, therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to them all in the calculation of the efficiency of the results. During this project, the company Birštono mineraliniai vandenys have also developed and implemented solar energy and air re-circulation technology, bottle filling, pallet wrap film minimization technologies.

Summary of bilateral results

The partner - Berg Holding AS - used it's experience in implementing environmental projects: Project Partner consulted Project Promoter on developing new product technologies as well as greening the production process. Together companies developed and exploited and utilized the possibilities in achieving certified emission reduction units (Co2-quotas) as a spin-off related to the developed green product technologies.
