Description

Pereces was an individual mine camp village but today it is the part of Miskolc. The once glorious Pereces is regularly out of developments. The local opportunities for entertainment, community-cultural initiations are very limited. Many parts of Pereces are getting to be slums. The objective of the project is to make the community in Pereces more active, be involved in processes which affect their lives. It aims to help the youngsters with thinking consciously, make them motivated and be able to act for their own villages’ future. It also aims to strengthen the relation between the Roma, non-Roma citizens and the participants with different social background thus to make them tolerant. The project promoter aims to involve 50 more volunteers or active members and collaborate with 10 different organizations. Community programs such as “Outstanding Days” will be organized. 40 blog entries will be posted, the visitors of the website is expected to increase up to 2500. Civil Forums and Future Workshops will be held, and a decoration competition will be announced. The target group includes the already active volunteers (30 people), more generation of local citizens (3000).

Summary of project results

The situation of Pereces, a suburb of MIskolc is contradictory. Local identity could be developed considering local circumstances and values, but the stereotypes regarding Roma people and the part of the settlement itself make the situation much worse. The aim of the project was to continue a so far successful series of dialogue with the community which is based on common actions developed jointly by the local people during the project, and to involve local people of Pereces in community processes as actors to make them capable to think and act more consciously regarding the future of their settlement (4000 people). Further goal was to help the development of social cohesion between Roma and non Roma people and make them accept the ethnic differences. Besides the dialogue, project activities included a community decoration project, making participatory video (with volunteers), running of a community blog and publishing a local newspaper with a comics appendix. The process was implemented in strong collaboration with the local and neighbouring NGOs. Through all this, they hope to achieve the enhancement of self-organization in the community of Pereces, the reformulation of the local identity and the reduction of interethnic conflicts. As a result of the project 177 225 were informed about this project (based on the website statistics) and 57 volunteers joined to the organization, the organization became well-known and could establish 10new cooperations with other entities.
