Description

Two thirds of the population of the settlement live in the older part, 80% of them are Roma people. The shop and the pub do not work here because of the poverty. People are depending on the unpredictable public work organized by the local government as the infrastructure is bad thus it makes people immobile and strengthens their confinements. In 2012 a community house was established that helped people with its several services. The main objective of the project is to develop the capacity of the organization. It aims to make this part of the village become a supportive community and to make this community be able to undertake community affairs; to make the community solidary, self-supportive and be able to represent their interests. 18 new members, 17 collaborations with organizations and 8 active volunteers are expected to join. During the project 2 best practice visits, 4 organizational development trainings, 6 civil workshops and 6 community programs and a youth club will be organized. A problem database will be registered in which the order is decided by the community. 3 problems will be solved. The target group includes the citizens of Szajla (630 people).

Summary of project results

The project’s target group was the marginalized Roma community living in Ószajla (it is a segregated part of a village, Szajla; 80% of the population are Roma). The aim was to empower this community and start changes by organizing community programs, meeting points; involving them and the members of the association into the process of planning and implementation. Organizers provided basic services for the community members by making the quality of life better. The goal was to involve the majority of the Roma community as members or volunteers of the association, and that the village recognizes and supports it. Main activities were: open community programs giving experiences for everybody; civic roundtables for developing the community, thinking and acting together; club for children and youngsters for developing self-activity skills. The direct target group was Roma people between 18-45 years; the indirect target group was all inhabitants of Szajla. The organizers cooperated with local decision-makers, professionals and (non-local) civic organizations. The project promoter also could build new contacts and collaborations with other civil and public institutions and organizations in the frame of the project, and they joined to the North-Hungary Settlement House Movement. They collaborate with similar organizations, share ideas and informations and this way help each others work.
