Description

The sub-county of Salgótarján is one of the places which are contaminated by crimes. The local settlements have the need for preventive initiations however the activeness is weak among the communities; the civic guard organizations are professionally not prepared and their social reputation is low. Winning the support for this project made people more enthusiastic that can be a good base for activating local resources in a long term. The main objective of the project is to develop their previous results and the movement itself, to show best practices and to establish a Civic Crime Prevention Educational Center in which the trainings of activists will be realized. The Centre aims to ensure a basement where the surveillance camera system and also a law enforcement exhibition will take place. The project promoter will edit a publication, organizing trainings, meeting, professionals’ forums, all-day community programs and a conference. The target group includes the activists and supporters of the Movement (40 persons), and aims to achieve 19 civic guard organizations (about 400 people).

Summary of project results

Local crime prevention activities in the district are important, but the professional know-how, the social acceptance, the cooperation among the organizations and common actions are missing. The aim was to improve the ’Neighbours for Each Other Movement’ on the district level, to share best practices and establish a District Civil Crime Prevention Centre and Training Base as a model, where the training of crime prevention NGOs and the ’NEOM’ activists can take place, and thereby the cooperation of the local community, and strengthening of the broader civil sector can come true. The target groups were the members of the civil crime prevention organizations and the whole population. Activities of the project included a District Neighbourhood Watch Day, a conference, team-building and nine trainings for local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region, and marketing actions. Based on the mobilizing effect of the local resources, the civic organizations involved into the project will be able to implement their aims on higher level, the cooperation become closer, the common thinking and action have been launched. As a result of the project a common thinking had been launched among the local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region, and on the long run their cooperation was enhanced, which is expected to be resulted in concrete future cooperation projects. But the project also contributed to strengthening the cohesion of local communities. The local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region were not sufficiently prepared, their local embeddedness were weak, and local people didn’t efficiently supported their work as lacking of interest and information, knowledge about their work. As a result of the project, the local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region could successfully involve new members, and they could train their staff, members, so their professional preparedness was improved. The members of the local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region together mapped the main problems realized by them in the region, so a united view had been designed about the main problems, sources of threats of the region. A guide book was also elaborated about the professional necessary knowledge and information for local neighbourhood watch organizations in the region.
