Description

The purpose of the project is to boost self-training of 16-20 young roma women at one of the most disadvantaged areas of Hungary. Our experience is that roma women are the most responsive to integrative intentions. Their knowledge and orientation is the most determining on the lifestyle and education of roma families. The training gives knowledge to make easier everyday life and to improve the way of living. This innovative programme gives indirect forms of community knowledge transfer between roma women, using constructive pedagogical methods. The idea came directly from roma women living in Halmaj: „Roma women from other villages should come to see the way we live, clean our houses and make the garden!” This model of roma women knowledge transfer is accompanied by Holdam Association ( Miskolc ) giving experience and support. Furthermore the question of women’s right and mental hygiene is added to the project.

Summary of project results

The main aim of the project was to organise a roma women mentorgroup, whose members interiorize social responsibility and are prepared to achieve community tasks. During the activities of the project the participant roma women gained knowledge in the fields of representing women’s rights, community mediation, local club managing, handling communication in conflict based situations and passing informal knowledge in youth groups. The roma women used their acquired competences by sharing information with young roma girls in local schools about female intim hygiene, contraception, early childbearing and domestic violence. The participating mentors also organised baby-mother club, foster parent club, and joined actively in community actions, conferences, events. A regional cooperation started at Hernád-völgye between the participating roma mentor women.
