Description

The education of Roma and disadvantaged youth is unsuccessful; moreover there are several prejudices in our society towards them. The main goal of the project is to develop a special board game to provide experience for teacher candidates about the problems of these young people. With the help of the game the participants gain useful knowledge and get an efficient tool which is applicable in their work. The long term objective of the project is to introduce awareness raising and equal opportunities into secondary school teaching practice. Direct target groups: pre-service teachers, university students on supporting tracks, educators in teacher training, teachers in secondary schools, colleagues of NGOs. Indirect target group: disadvantaged/Roma youth, secondary school pupils. Collaborators of the project will become more conscious in awareness raising, their work focus on the problems of disadvantaged/Roma youth will be known and they will reach and activate further supporters.

Summary of project results

There are lots of prejudices against disadvantaged children. The main objective of the project was to promote the integration of children living in extreme poverty. A board game was elaborated that attracts the attention to the problem, and helps to understand the backgrounds in a playful way thus the game have a sensitizing effect. The game was tested with disadvantaged children and different stakeholders thus their reflections and opinions helped the process. Volunteers and members of 3 organizations collected and evaluated the related; literature, elaborated, tested and finalized the game. 28 workshops were organized in order to announce the game which became popular: 32 teacher’s college, 85 institutions, 108 pedagogies got a piece (more than expected). The project reached 1500 people. As a result of the program the prejudices against disadvantaged youngsters and Roma people decreased and the knowledge about the causes of their school failure and possible good solutions increased.
