Description

As a result of job losses, the local communities have fallen apart in the last twenty years. The situation of Roma people living in extreme poverty is disappointing. The conflicts and tension between Roma and non-Roma communities have intensified a lot. The objective is to reduce ethnic tension and to develop more cooperation between the two communities by creating a space to share for Roma and non-Roma youth, by the active help of participants in a volunteer programme. The project addresses the challenges by the incorporation of participants through public spaces, family visits and in schools, creating a children’s corner in the study room, creating murals in the center of Pátka, and also organizing a parents’ day. The beneficiaries are the entire village.

Summary of project results

There is a big gap between the Roma and non-Roma community in Patka. The Roma people live in a slum, where most people are very poor. The supported association found out that they could make a a special "children's room" in the centre of Pátka, where Roma and non-Roma youngsters could play or just spend time together and they could make a special mural from Roma and non-Roma pupils' art creations. They had three diffierent kinds of activities. 1, Group courses for pupils and adults. 2, building of the children's room. 3, Mural making "together campaign". First it was hard to involve the beneficiaries. For this they had to realize a lot of courses. The main benefit was that the Roma and non-Roma people together realize some things. They took part in courses together and planned the children's room and the mural together. After the project, the two communities could cooperate with eachother easier.
