Description

Teaching about human rights is almost unheard of in Hungarian state education. Students in disadvantaged regions have even less chance to study about their rights. Our objective is to enable children through human rights education within schools to get to know their own situation and the importance of standing up for themselves, the basis of it and its methods. The project outcome is social and human rights issues affecting the lives of students are integrated into the educational programme of participating schools, teachers can apply the methods learned, the number of students in education increases. Our outputs are human rights training for students; methodology-educational workshop for teachers, publication of training materials, measuring results and organizing a summer camp. The target groups are students, teachers and leaders/managers of two schools, municipal leaders, civil leaders and leaders of Roma minority self-governments.

Summary of project results

Awareness of human rights is very low in Hungary among vulnerable groups especially in the poorest regions. Prejudiced attitude on the other side is very common. Therefore, the project promoters wanted to empower the students in Borsodnádasd, Pétervására and Sajókaza by making them aware of their rights and the rights of others. Through the pre-judgement relief trainings an attitude-change in the participants was achieved in different horizontal aspects. They gave lessons with drama methods and creative teamworks regarding several minority groups, as well as gender and LGBTQIA. The trainings, the human rights summer camp and the events were organized with the help of Dr. Ámbédkar School in Sajókaza, which made it possible for the knowledge and attitude to stay and grow in the region, as well as the transferred knowledge and attitude of the participant students (180), teachers (45) and relatives (400). The teachers' handbook, that was constructed at the end of the project is going to help the project promoters and others to continue the work that was started.
