Description

The project focuses on education for intercultural understanding, human rights and democratic values. Τhe goal is to combat hate speech associated with phenomena of racism, xenophobia and social exclusion in general, by engaging in an active, participatory manner all target groups. The target groups of the project are students and teachers of primary education, students of University Faculties of Primary Education in Greece and the public. Main activities are the provision of non-formal education with the tools of the Council of Europe in 500 students at 20 schools, 180 teachers of primary education and 180 university students in 9 cities in Greece, as well as information and awareness raising of the general public through outdoor painting of school facilities, tv spot and informative leaflets.

Summary of project results

The project aspired to be a comprehensive intervention in terms of providing information, raising awareness and prevention in matters related to the issue of hate speech. All project actions aimed to combat hate speech through the promotion of respect of human rights and the strengthening of democratic values. In the context of the one-year project, educational training of non-formal education for fighting hate speech were conducted, using selected educational tools of the Council of Europe (Compassito, Compasss, Bookmarks, Educational Pack: “All Different all Equal”). Trainings were conducted in 9 Greek cities (Athens, Patra, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Rhodes, Alexandroupolis, Florina, Volos and Rethymno) with the objective of providing information and raising awareness among pupils, teachers, and students, in order to address the development of stereotypes, discrimination, racist behaviour and any expression of hate speech in the context of prevention. The educational seminars were attended, in total, by 638 Primary School pupils, 210 Primary School Teachers, and 169 students of Faculties of Primary Education. In addition, providing information and raising awareness among the general public constituted a basic pillar of the project: first, a TV spot, broadcasted through Greece on tv and online; second, the organisation of artistic interventions in 5 selected schools, in order to reach the entire school community (pupils, teachers, other school personnel), including the pupils’ parents and their extended family.

Summary of bilateral results

The EWC was chosen as a partner based on the experience of executives in human rights education. EWC colleagues undertook the development of educational strategy and development scientific planning educational activities of the project in accordance with the principles of human rights and democracy. All actions adapted to the needs of the program and the target groups, from the first workshop in May 2015 with the three-day training of trainers workshop. Communication and cooperation existed throughout the project. Before the end of the project, Leeton workshop which concerned the report on operations and the definition of the strategy that will ensure the best possible sustainability of the project results, and also discussed prospects of future cooperation between the two bodies.
