Description

A number of techniques to recover contaminated soil are currently available. They are however mostly in the form of digging up the soil and storing it in landfills, since it is a quick and cheap option. This is on the other hand, from the environmental point of view, unsustainable method. New methods must therefore, to be an economical alternative and technically viable compared to the traditional, make use of new technologies and decontamination processes. IRAGAZ is developing the BIO-NANO project in order to boost and bring to market new remediation techniques for contaminated soils based on the application of nanoparticles of zero-valent iron and surface modified by organic waste bioremediation accelerators, and the development of mixed media derived from the simultaneous application of both techniques. Thus, the project will examine whether using the combination of both technologies is possible to generate a positive interaction through synergy and therefore improve the overall outcome of the treatments applied in soil remediation.

Summary of project results

IRAGAZ carries out the BIO-NANO project with the aim of launching to the market new remediation technologies of contaminated ground based on the application of nano-particles of iron zero valency superficially modified and bio-remediation through organic waste as accelerators, such as the development of the mix technique which derives from the application of both techniques at the same time. The results of this project allows IRAGAZ, to have a revolutionary technology able to consolidate in the international markets and which allows to remedy the contaminated grounds through a new system, ecological and low impact, based on two new technologies, the bio-remediation of ground thanks to compost and the use of nano-particles of iron zero valency together with the mix technique mentioned before. During 2015 we have finish the R&D activities at a preindustrial scale TRL6, so we will dedicate 2016 and 2017 to carry out the technology to a TRL9 stage
