Description

Reducing fuel consumption of vehicles is presented as one of the priority objectives to optimize energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The rolling resistance of tires is a basic factor in the fuel consumption. Re-treaded tires currently account for 40% of consumption of commercial vehicle tires. The objective of the project is to improve the technical characteristics and performance of re-treaded tires for large commercial vehicles (trucks). It will develop an innovative product with better performance than conventional products, which will be an alternative to reduce risk of failure or accident and improve the environment. The results of the new formulations and optimization of tire characteristics can get a 5% decrease in fuel consumption of vehicles that incorporate the new tires versus standard tires. However, these results are potentially better depending on the quality of comparison tire models. The project will provide benefits to the transport sector and road services, offering a product that can reduce fuel consumption and improve durability.

Summary of project results

The project called for progress in the investigation of new formulations of rubber for retread manufacturing, allowing the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. We have developed the formulation of a compound from new generation lampblack, designed to achieve similar to those achieved with rubbers functionalized silica compounds. We have obtained the new prototype tires for the test. The new formulation has RRC 0.3 N /kN lower than the current formulation. It is estimated that this result is a reduction in fuel consumption 0.21 liters / 100 km.
