Description

Some oil components can build up in the food chain, having detrimental long-term effects for marine organisms. Furthermore, some hydrocarbons are considered as potential mutagenic and/or carcinogenic agents. The project addresses the design, development and validation of new bioremediation technology solutions that minimize the impact associated with the presence of hydrocarbons in the environment. The project will focus on three elements: - Bioremediation of ETBE (Ethyl tert-butyl ether) and TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons) in groundwater, making use of biological processes specifically designed for the particular characteristics of each case of contamination. - Bioremediation of hydro-carbonated waste-waters, by developing a new technology based of new absorbents capable of retaining pollutants, and at the same time adhering microorganisms which degrade mentioned pollutants. - Mitigation and monitoring the process of biodegradation of soils treated through bioremediation processes, in order to achieve a methodology that minimizes the monitoring work and to optimize the design of such actions in the future.

Summary of project results

CLH is a leading company for petroleum & oil transportation and storage. Thus, it is necessary for CLH to perform a big effort to eliminate hydrocarbons’ negative effects on water and soils. The scope of the project are: •Bioremediation of ETBE (ethyl-tertio-butyl-ether) and TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) in groundwater, using specifically designed biological processes. •Bioremediation of hydrocarbonated waste-waters, by developing a new technology based of new absorbents capable of retaining pollutants and adhering microorganisms which degrade those mentioned pollutants. *Mitigation and monitoring the process of biodegradation of soils treated through bioremediation processes, in order to develop a new treatment methodology that minimizes the environmental impact. At the end of the project, these objectives have been successfully achieved. The outcomes of this research have been documented in deliverables, which now belong to the company’s know-how.
