Description

Public authorities are forced to maximise the efficiency of their spending and investments, and public lighting is one of the fields where improvement is often feasible due in part to the application of new technologies like LED. To support the development in lighting technology, a new generation of measurement systems is available, based on advanced vehicles integrating all kind of sensors for the measurement of photometric parameters. The challenge now is to make the best possible use of this information to improve the procedures used to evaluate street lightning facilities, allowing for the accurate identification of where improvements can be made. The proposed project intends to create a platform for the development of this knowledge, based on one of the most advanced of the "Illumetric" dynamic measurement system. The project activities will focus on the application of this new information for the calculation of various parameters involved in energy efficiency calculation, as well as to create methods and criteria that may be applicable to other scenarios.

Summary of project results

The project was created in order to respond to the market's need for a method to evaluate energy efficiency for luminance dynamic measurement equipment. Existing methods were not able to take advantage of all potential benefits from dynamic systems. The objective was thus to develop new algorithms for assessing public lighting and measure local energy efficiency dynamically. The activities have been focused on different aspects of the problem: - Estimation of effective lighting energies - Estimation of local energy consumption using the photometric data together with conventional consumption measurements made on the premises. - Creation of evaluation criteria for real local effectiveness of public lighting installations - Adaptation of the measurement methods and the criteria to different application environments (urban areas, illuminated roads, tunnels ....) and demonstration of the procedures developed. Upon completion, the project has resulted in the design of new algorithms that enables the analysis and evaluation of new data. Additionally, the project developed software designed in a modular scalable way that allows for easy implementation of acquired data. Furthermore, the project modeled public lighting power consumption and used the developed algorithms and software to estimate the power output of a lamp. This project is a step forward for evaluating public lighting installations, making the most out of the new dynamic measurement methods to detect possible improvements in public facilities. At this moment CIDRO has a competitive advantage and the company clients a valuable tool to assess the energy efficiency of public lighting. The company has already done a study to energy efficiency of public lighting for one city of the province of Madrid.
