Description

The objective of this CROMOGENIA UNITS SA research and development project is to produce a new synthesis of hydroxyalkylamides (chemical additive) without using contaminants when producing curing agent for powder coatings applied to electrical appliances. The new synthesis of hydroxyalkylamides will be more environmentally sustainable and environmentally friendly. Also, it will be a more efficient process than the current synthesis, to obtain a higher quality product (with less impurities than currently) and eliminating intermediate steps such as distillation of methanol before application of powder coatings. This will also lead to a more competitive cost of the final product.

Summary of project results

The main objective of this project is research and develop a new synthesis hydroxyalkylamides without using contaminants organic solvents for use as a curing agent for powder coatings applied to white goods. The new synthesis of preparing hydroxyalkyl in solid state, developed in the mark of this project, has carried out by reacting alkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids alkanolamines at controlled reaction temperatures, removing the alcohol from the product, controlling the temperature of the reaction mixture and recovering the solid hydroxyalkylamides by a direct method as flacking. The addition of organic solvents has been replaced for water. The new process has been tested in a pilot plant, and at a semi-industrial level. The new synthesis developed is more environmentally sustainable. Also, it is a more efficient process than the current synthesis, to obtain a higher quality product and has eliminated intermediate steps, which lead to a more competitive cost of the final product.
