Description

We are confronted by a very competitive market when we talk about thermoplastic and composite materials. It is therefor necessary to offer innovative solutions based on environmental protection and social responsibility to move towards a more sustainable and “green” positioning on the market. The overall objective of this research project is the development of a new generation of thermoplastic and composite, using a new generation of ABS with natural fibers or wood as part of raw materials and combinations of ABS polymer from renewable sources (bio-blends). This development will cover the increasing demand for new bioplastics and biocomposites, especially in the automotive sector.

Summary of project results

ELIX Polymers is a leading manufacturer of ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) resins and derivatives in Europe. The thermoplastic and composite materials is a very competitive market and it is necessary to offer innovative solutions based on environmental protection and social responsibility to move towards a more sustainable and “green” positioning on the market. According to these precepts, ELIX Polymers has developed a new generation of environmental friendly ABS based materials. Specifically, the company has studied blends of ABS with PLA (Polylactic Acid) and blends of ABS with natural fibers (wood and cellulose fiber). The project has obtained very positive results and the thermoplastic ABS composition reinforced with natural fibres is in process to be patented in different European countries (total: 38 countries).
