Description

The objective of the project is the restoration of the Illuka manor school cultural heritage building. As a result of this project, Illuka manor school in Ida-Viru County in Estonia will be restored and public access to it ensured. Within the project, indoor and facade construction works of the main building of the manor will be conducted. In addition to the existing functionality as an educational institution, the project will enable use of the manor building as a local cultural and tourism centre as of 2016. The exhibitions, theme events and different recreational possibilities planned to take place in the building offer the local residents and visitors the possibility of enjoying the historical and cultural heritage of Illuka. Two partners from Estonia cooperate in project. Estonian Manor School Association and Pannjärve Health Sport Centre will assist the project promoter in publication activities.

Summary of project results

Illuka manor is used by a local basic school and nursery school. Illuka is situated in a remote area, but nearby are some nationally important tourism attractions. The main building needed urgent repair to avoid further damage to the building through a leaking roof. Illuka municipality contributed a high rate of self-financing. The restoration works were of good quality. The improvement of the learning environment increased the reputation of the school, but enabled also to promote the manor school as a heritage site and to add a needed strategical object to the local tourism network. Local community has also suitable premises for various activities. The restoration works enjoyed the interest of local and national media. The project supported balanced regional development, respect and responsibility for cultural heritage, sustainable and multifunctional use of rural buildings and enables to create new services and jobs.
