Description

The project is needed to prevent that children in Tartu County move to the path of crime. The project goal is to develop youth work camp methodology as an effective crime prevention programme for Tartu county municipalities. The project will be developed together with professionals, businesses and governments, it will be in line with well-known methods for dealing with crime prevention, and it will be carried out in work camps for young people living in conditions of risk. In addition to research and training, the methodology developed inyouth work camps will be piloted with100 young people in the summer of 2015. During the youth work camp practice, the potential of this methodology to develop a functioning communal crime prevention program for smaller municipalities is great.

Summary of project results

The project was needed to pilot youth work camps as crime prevention method. As project promoter estimated today youngsters are not used to work, they have no work ethics and do not know what work means, especially in risk areas such countryside. Project goal was to fulfil youngsters free time with work camps and give them a hint of working and receiving their own salary. Among other activities a study was made among youngsters and their parents. Another one was made after the camps were finished. 83 young people and 53 parents participated. Trainins and seminars were held. Topics were - coordinating youth work camp - juridical aspects, giving better experience for youth, economical sustainability for youth camps, networking and learning to work. All youth centers and local governments were invited. altogether 82 persons took part. Youth work camps were held in Statoil, in fruit farms and other places in Tartu and around it. 89 youngsters participated in the camps. Aside working many activities were held and youngsters jad their free time fulfilled with practical and leasure activities. Feedback from youngsters and from their parents was very good as both parties estimated participation successful due to new knowledge and new friends found from the camps.
