Description

The project focuses on improving the role of the Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF) and other environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Estonia in nationwide policy on forest development processes. The main goal is to increase the capability of environmental NGOs in expressing their opinions concerning the processes in forest policy in Estonia. As a result of this project the dialog between environmental organizations and government institutions will improve the cooperation between the private forest owners and forest companies. The problems concerning sustainable forestry will be expressed in mass media; therefore public support for the environmental NGOs and forestry issues will increase. Important viewpoints will be communicated via lobby work. At the same time the competence in understanding the sustainable forestry conception will increase through training and participating in meetings. The partners are Estonian Ornithological Society and Estonian Environmental Law Center.

Summary of project results

The objective of the project was to increase the role of the Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF) and other environmental NGOs in Estonia in nationwide forest policy development processes. The position of Environmental NGOs in Estonia is that the forest policy in Estonia is focused on forest management and the nature conservation is not the priority. During the project we tried to improve the dialog between environmental organisations of forestry thorough different workshops, as result of the project the dialog between them intensified. The problems concerning sustainable forestry had been expressed in media. The environmental NGO’s viewpoints had been communicated during the lobby work (tracking the forestry and conservation development plans, tracking the agreements between the Ministry of Environment and ELF, etc.). The book “Best forestry practice" (http://elfond.ee/et/teemad/mets/metsandus-eestis/koostoeoe/eeskoste-suu…) improved to increase the competence of nature conservation in forestry of the people who are working in forest management companies.
