Description

This project aims to build a comprehensive exhibition of unique textile collection focusing on the issue of folk costumes and textiles in Moravian Wallachia, comprising of 30,000 items. Since there was no suitable space in the Wallachian Museum, the complete textile collection could not be presented in a dignified manner. Only thematic items and pieces were used during the realization of specialized programmes, or, were previously (during the 1980s) loaned to museums for short-term thematic exhibitions. After the reconstruction of the so-called “Sušák” (“Drier”) building the Wallachian Museum acquired a suitable space for such exhibition. The objective of the project is thus creation of the exhibition which will reinforce the mission of the Wallachian Museum and disseminate information about the lifestyle of our ancestors, with a particular focus on the Wallachia region and its surroundings. The planned exhibition with approximately 1,000 items shall be informative, educational and shall provide active learning, using state-of-the-art information and communication technologies and will be in line with conditions for the protection and archiving of the exhibited artifacts. Apart from the exhibition accompanied by an official catalogue, methodology for educational programmes and tour guides and workshops, the Wallachian Museum will expand its online database with new application containing descriptions and 2D and 3D scan presentations of each from 15,000 individual parts of the textile collection. This database will be available to public. The Maihaugen Museum from Norway, one of the most important foreign natural museums will share its best practice in order to improve the innovative and effective ways of presentation of the textile artefacts in Wallachian Museum.

Summary of project results

The main aim of the project was to build a comprehensive exhibition of unique textile collection focusing on the issue of folk costumes and textiles in Moravian Wallachia. The new opened exhibition with exactly 1150 items was designed in an informative and educational form, includes active learning parts and communication technologies and is in line with conditions for the protection and archiving of the exhibited artifacts. The project included not only the installation of the exhibition, but also other activities—creating an online catalogue of the museum’s textile collection (15039 items), publishing the guide and the catalogue for the exhibition, and establishing cooperation with our Norwegian partner, museum Maihaugenn in Lillehammer. The museum has for the first time in such large scope opened to the public its remarkable textile collection containing as many as 20,000 collection items that document the developmental forms of traditional, civilian and liturgical clothing, but also clothing accessories or interior textiles since the end of the 18th century till the middle of the 20th century. This is a remarkable initiative not only on the grounds of the Rožnov museum, but also among similar activities of all museums in the Czech Republic.

Summary of bilateral results

In partnership with the Maihaugen Museum (Lillehammer), two workshops were held in the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, which corresponded to the sub-themes of the project. The first one was focused on the digitization of cultural heritage in museums in nature, the second focused on the discussion about textile and traditional clothing in museum collections and their use in the specific environment of the museum. Each workshop was attended by four members of the MML. Four representatives of the Norwegian partner also attended the opening ceremony in December 2016. The co-operation of the two museums was established in 2006 and futher cooperation is planned also thanks to this project.
