Description

The aim of the project is to increase post-industrial sites where the near-nature restoration approach was applied. We also plan to improve general knowledge about restoration ecology dealing with topics mentioned above. We will realize 4 near-nature restoration measures with the aim to support threatened species. Therefore they can serve as examples of good practice. We plan to organize a seminar about geologic and legislative aspects concerning nature conservation in sand pits. We will provide restoration consultansy, publish the book Ecological restoration and enlarge web South Bohemian sand pits. We aim to be involved in decision-making processes to comment mining projects.

Summary of project results

Post-idustrial sites provide large potencial for nature conservation, especialy for endangered species and communities bounded on rare nutrient poor habitas. This unique chance is obviously wasted due to stereotypically planned reclamation projects, inssuciffient coopeation between research and practice and outdated legislation. Near natural restoration represents scietifically verified method how to improve such disturbed sites. The project is focused on propagation and popularization of above mentioned restoration approach in practice. The main aim of this project was „to increase the number of post-industrial localities with implemented near natural restoration in South Bohemia and improve the awareness of focus groups about this issue.“ The project succesfully meets the target. The NGO Calla realised various restoration measures on four localities promoting their biodivesity. The number of realised projects is further indirectly enhanced through participation in decision-making processes leading to implementation of near natural restoration principles into terms of decision. Another example of good practice is field meeting in the Cep II sand-pit, where appropriate restoration progression in this locality was defined. Another project outcomes included e.g. the seminar „Protection of sand pits: the earth science and the legislation“, the brochure Ecological restoration or new web „Discover your sand pit“ promoting the near natural restoration as low-cost and beneficial alternative of landscape management. The focus groups profitted from state of the art restoration findings and recommnedations how the scientific knowledge can be applied into the practice with the aim to find optimal approach including near nature restoration from nature conservation perspective. The project brought new opportunities for research of near.natural restoration in post-mining sites –e.g. the future establishment of donor sites with psamophilous vegetation in Cep II sand pit. The project systematically provided detailed informations about present-day trends in restoration of post-industrial sites to public and also specific focus groups of tourists. All targets groups used the eco and restoration consultancy services provided by NGO Calla.
