Description

The substance of this project is realization of terrain support of education of children and youth at the age of 2 to 15. The children are from two socially excluded localities of Vysočina Region. The target of this project is the increase of their competitiveness in the mainstream of education. Long-term vision of the project is increasing of the rate of employment in socially excluded localities. The project pursues sub-goals as increasing study success, prevention of early leaving the mainstream of education, the transition to a follow-up study, cooperation of organizations in order to remove barriers in education, the involvement of volunteers from socially excluded localities and also external volunteers.

Summary of project results

Children and young people living in two socially excluded communities have limited options of quality leisure time activities, as well as limited access to higher mainstream education. There are no day centres or other support organizations available in the area. One of the communities is characterized by spatial segregation, the other is isolated from the majority population of the town socially. The goal of the project was to provide children with quality leisure time opportunities and support them in achieving better school results, finishing mainstream elementary school and continuing in further education. The long-term aim was to increase their knowledge of the labor market and to increase the overall employment level in the area. The project was implemented using the means of outreach work in the form of a mobile low threshold facility. TP SOVY staff worked two days a week in each location, 4 hours a day. In the back of a modified van they implemented a program comprising group and individual education support and leisure activities. Involvement of the largest possible number of children was ensured by the incentive program. We have completed 140 days of work in both areas together, totaling 560 hours. The programme was regularly attended by 40 children. The project also created a network of cooperating organizations and methodologies aimed at teaching in a diverse group/classroom. We involved 23 volunteers, both from the communities and outside, who contributed 600 hours of their work. We organized eight meetings with schools and established partnerships with teachers of children involved in individual support.. The parents of preschool children participated in the program as well. Within the extra activities, children participated in camps, day trips, educational trips and excursions. They gained new knowledge about Roma culture and history, but also about the job market, career choices, and the demands of individual professions. The project received very good publicity. We have published 6 press releases, 4 articles appeared in the local press and 9 articles on the internet media.
