Description

The project is based on existing activities and experiences of IuRe in the field of human rights, new technologies and information processing. It addresses both, the issue of free and efficient sharing and dissemination of information on one hand as well as the issue of data privacy on the other. The main goal of the project is to support professionalism and improve know-how of NGOs when using Creative Commons free licences for more efficient information processing and dissemination, as well as introducing rules for personal data processing of NGOs´ clients and strengthening the position of NGOs in relation to public administration.

Summary of project results

The main objective of this project was to increase the professionality of NGOs in the field of personal data protection and watchdog activity in this area and the use of Creative Commons licences as a tool to a achieve a more efficient functioning of these organisations. As expected, there was little knowledge on the importance of personal data protection and risks resulting from non-compliance with rules. Legal capacities were not sufficient and there was also lack of financing for legal use of copyrighted content and lack of knowledge regarding the use of public licences. As for the main target group of NGOs and their employees, we have delivered 10 workshops and approximately 50 consultations regarding legal and IT issues related to personal data protection and the use of Creative Commons licences. We published three handbooks on these topics. We have also organised a watchdog campaign raising attention to risks related to the breach of privacy. This campaign targeted media as well as the public. Most of the issues we have discussed with NGO representatives involved mainly the setup of repeating processed - and thus we believe that the sustainability of project results will remain in the long term. Through activities delivered (workshops, consultations, handbooks), we have contributed to professionality of NGOs and their employees as our target group. The efficiency of NGOs was improved and the level of compliance with legal rules within the outlined areas was increased. The NGOs clients can thus profit from increased quality of personal data processing and from better accessibility to NGOs outputs achieved thanks to the use of public licences. In a systematic way, we have provided the media topics related to data protection as well as expert opinions, which led to an increased number of media outputs.
