Description

Czech nature is rich and diverse but also contains many vulnerable species. These species need an active protection. A document called an action plan contains guidelines for nature conservation authorities, researches and owners of land how to maintain endangered species populations. It is a special tool which provides complex knowledge of species and recommends the measures how to support the species. The project is about implementation of such measures. The Bohemian Sand Pink (Dianthus arenarius subsp. bohemicus) is specially protected species therefor the “Action Plan for Bohemian Sand Pink” was prepared in the year 2008. The project meets the target of the state environmental policy of the Czech Republic for 2012-2020. The main objective of the project is the implementation of the action plan by habitat management in the Kleneč area, one of the two areas of the species occurrence. The project outcomes are the increasing of level of the species-habitat quality. The project outputs are management of site in appropriate intervals and quality at selected areas, treatment of areas entrained humus horizon, disposal of trees and regular mowing. The project will also include part of publicity incl. publishing of brochure, an information board and tourist stamp. The target group of the project is primarily a species and nature-conservation authorities. Secondarily, the protection and connected activities will carry out the influence over the general public via education.

Summary of project results

As the name of the plant suggests, the Bohemian Sand Pink only thrives on sandy soil. However, open sandy areas with no or little topsoil are becoming very rare in this country. Almost all fluvial terraces and dunes were either mined out or planted with non-indigenous woody plants and in this respect, legal protection has changed very little, if anything. Following conservation trends of that time, animal grazing and grass mowing were banned, so the area was developing naturally and as a result the Sand Pink habitat was becoming progressively worse. Activities have been done: Mowing - It was mowed with 2.5 hectares of mosaic-like mowing on the Klenč site and mowing 0.9 ha of grass at the Kyškovice site in 2015. Mechanized dredging on selected areas. On site Kleneč was performed stripping topsoil - the estimated volume of the extracted material was set at 1300m3. Treating surfaces entrained humus horizon - the aim of this measure is small-scale liquidation of the expansive species of grasses around the trunk of the Bohemian Sand Pink, removal of the fall of the surrounding trees and disturbance and disturbance of the moss floor. Destruction of seedlings - the measure was aimed at the continuous removal of attacking tree species (especially acacia, or pine, poplar) from a predetermined part of the site on an area of 0.5 ha Education and education - correction of the information panel, publishing a brochure about the Bohemian Sand Pink, and the release of the comic book. Photogrammetric work A new Tourist Medallion (see the figure) was issued at the 65th anniversary of legal protection of the locality. It is available at the Tourist Information Centre in Roudnice nad Labem or at Obecní úřad (the local authority) in Kleneč.
