Description

The project addresses the need for greater tolerance, intercultural communication and inclusion of the Roma community in the town of Razgrad. The project aims at raising the awareness of the Roma community, women and girls in particular, about their rights and opportunities via a series of training courses. First, 6 volunteers and 6 mothers with their daughters aged 10-14 will be selected as participants. Second, 5 workshops will be held to raise their awareness about volunteering and EU citizens’ rights, Bulgarian institutions, the importance of education, early marriages and childbirth, prevention, hygiene and vaccines. Finally, the 12 mothers and girls will receive practical training on being a mother, working woman and a housewife. The project will benefit the Roma community in the town of Razgrad, women and girls in particular, and the local community. The partner will share experience, expertise and be actively involved in all project activities.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the need for greater tolerance, intercultural communication and inclusion of the Roma community in the town of Razgrad. It took the children and women out of the closed communities and placed them in a new environment educating in democratic values which helped mobilize the target group, create trust and change the attitudes and behaviour. The project aimed at curbing intolerance in the public by an approach of raising awareness and including, spreading fundamental human rights as part of the democratic values of the civil society. The main results that we achieved include raised awareness of the target group, inclusion of volunteers and improved and acquired knowledge and practical skills of the target group with regard to human rights, the role of women in society and in the family, improved communication in the family and the society. The information activities involved representatives of the target groups, i.e. volunteers (6 people) and Roma women and girls (6 families of mothers and daughters aged 10-15). The skills acquired from the partner’s experts for work with representatives of the Roma community enabled the project promoter to implement other projects as well.
