Description

The project addresses the need to raise awareness among school students about human rights. The project aims at raising the students’ awareness and commitment via a series of lectures and videos. First, the management of 40th Louis Pasteur Secondary School in Sofia will plan the lectures with the applicant and the NGO experts from the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC), Amnesty International and European Information Centres. Second, 10 lectures on human rights and EU citizens’ rights will be delivered to 120 students. Third, the students will prepare at least 7 videos with the personal stories of victims of human rights violations in Bulgaria. Finally, a film will made of the videos to be disseminated to the education institutions. The project will benefit the students involved, the teachers, school management, parents, the NGOs and the education institutions. The partner will provide the premises, coordinate the students and teachers and disseminate the project results.

Summary of project results

The project was necessary to identify, raise awareness and help reduce the cases of violated citizens’ rights among school students. The Annual Report of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee for 2013 on human rights in Bulgaria states that “in most areas of human rights in Bulgaria there was hardly any progress in 2013, while in other areas systematic and grave violations could be observed”. The project achieved the following results: (1) raised the awareness of 120 school students from 40th Secondary School on civil rights after 10 delivered lectures; (2) raised the knowledge and disseminated information about civil rights among the target audience of the project including the broad public by creating, presenting and broadcasting a film on the topic; (3) presented specific cases of people whose rights were violated in Bulgaria; (4) help prevent violations of human rights by raising the awareness of the students about it. The most important project outcomes involve raising awareness and educating adolescents about human rights so as to have zero tolerance towards violation of human rights. A permanent shift in the mindset of the young people who took part in the project was achieved, as they got first-hand experience of the faces and lives of people whose rights were violated.
