Description

The project addresses the challenges faced by parents of children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SPH) related to access to treatment, healthcare, rehabilitation and social inclusion. The project aims at raising awareness of such parents about their rights and access to social and health services and encouraging them to share experience with other parents. First, 30 parents from 15 families raising children with SBH will attend a 1-day training on access to health and social services, parenting psychology, supportive parenting. Second, 15 children with SBH will have a half-day training session in parallel with their parents to develop their emotional intelligence. Third, a 15-minute video with parents sharing tips with other parents will be created and disseminated. The project will benefit not only these 15 families and children in Varna but also other children and families with SBH and the community in general.

Summary of project results

The project was very important for the families of children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Bulgaria. A positive change and empowerment of the families was achieved through support with knowledge and the dissemination of self-help and solidarity mechanisms.31 parents were trained and improved their knowledge and communication skills in and outside the family. They developed their capacity to provide voluntary help to other parents. Thus these 15 families will no longer be vulnerable and will be prepared to support with knowledge and skills. 11 videos were developed and uploaded on the website to cover a broader number of families. A leaflet with practical tips for the rights of families and children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus was prepared and disseminated. In addition 19 children from the target group and their brothers and sisters were trained to improve their emotional stability.
